I’m Starting With The Man In The Mirror

We spend a lot of time upgrading our technical know-how.

We invest in AI. We buy research and data analysis tools. We build sophisticated marketing campaigns. We create beautiful, award-worthy creative work.

But what good are all these solutions if the people creating and using them can’t communicate their value?

Where budgets are tight and uncertainty looms, the ability to communicate is more important than ever. Not just in writing, but verbally. The ability to sell the worth of a solution. To explain why a new business model makes sense. To tell the story behind a marketing campaign and bring others along on the journey.

Yet before many presentations, something interesting happens.

Nobody wants to present.

Not the department head. Not the strategist. Not the designer who came up with the idea. Sometimes not even the C-suite executive expected to lead the room.

The irony? Many marketing and communication professionals are far more comfortable hiding behind PowerPoint slides, spreadsheets and beautifully designed documents than standing in front of a room and owning the conversation. Fear, and self-doubt, often get the better of them.

Perhaps that’s also why communication budgets are often among the first to be cut when organisations tighten their belts. We haven’t done enough to demonstrate the true value of communication itself. The ability to sell worth, purpose and intent isn’t a nice-to-have skill. It’s a business-critical one.

Because having all the tools at your fingertips means very little if you’re not investing in your most important tool…

YOURSELF.

No great leader walks onto a stage and simply wings it. They rehearse. Then they rehearse again. They visualise the room. They anticipate questions. They prepare answers. They refine their message until it becomes second nature.

Do that.

Invest as much in your ability to communicate as you do in the tools you use.

And if you’re looking for a few tips and tricks along the way, reach out. I’m always happy to share.
